May Monthly Meeting: Communicating During COVID

Good communication during a public health crisis keeps people safe, calm, and confident in your abilities. Kevin Cook, Director of Communications for the City of Lakeland, will share how his team has faced this challenge over the past year, including creating COVID-specific marketing materials and shifting to a very heavy presence on social media.
About the Speaker:
Kevin Cook oversees the City of Lakeland’s Centralized Communications Department. This effort includes all internal and external communications for the City of Lakeland. He started his tenure at the City as the RP Funding Center’s Marketing Coordinator in July 1993. He was made Marketing Manager July 1995 and served in that capacity until being named the City’s Public Information Officer in 2000. Cook was named the City of Lakeland’s first Director of Communications in 2002 and he built the Department to what it is today that includes government access television, website development and a very robust social media presence. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Jacksonville University in Mass Communication and a Master’s Degree from the University of South Florida . Cook serves on the Board for the YMCA, and is Past President of the Lakeland Highs School Lacrosse Booster Club. He is a Certified Public Manager from Florida State University and a graduate of Leadership Lakeland Class XIX. Cook is married to Tiffany who works for the Polk County School Board and they have two sons – Kai who is about to graduate from the University of Florida and Kaleb who plays lacrosse for Lynn University.
